Kota Kinabalu: A trip to the bank ended tragically for a man who was killed in an accident involving a Honda City and a three-tonne lorry which left another seriously injured and nine others slightly along Km27 Jalan Beaufort-Menumbok on Monday. A family acquaintance who wished to remain anonymous said the man was on his way to withdraw money for his wedding on Nov. 28.

"He was supposed to hand the money to the family of his bride-to-be this evening. The wedding day was supposed to take place a week from today," said the family friend.

The deceased Epol Akiw, a 39-year-old Kadazan from Kg Melampai, Kuala Penyu, was driving the Honda City towards Beaufort from Kuala Penyu when the 8.40am mishap took place.

Beaufort Police Chief DSP Azmir Abd Razak said initial investigations showed that he lost control of the vehicle which collided into the lorry which was heading the opposite direction.

The impact caused the Honda to crash into a ditch while the lorry skidded and landed on its roof.

Early findings showed that the lorry driven by a 46-year-old was carrying nine others, aged between 19 and 45, from Beaufort to Kuala Penyu. They were headed to Labuan on a cable instalment assignment.

The lorry driver and his eight passengers sustained slight injuries and were sent to the Kuala Penyu hospital.

The ninth passenger, Perry Liwin @ Livin, a 33-year-old Kadazan from Kg Marahang, Papar, suffered serious injuries.

A 8.40am distress call prompted six personnel from the Kuala Penyu Fire and Rescue Department led by Awang Mohd Sabree to the scene located about 13 kilometres away.

Also at the scene were personnel from the Malaysia Civil Defence Force.
