Lintas flyovers expected to be opened in July
Kota Kinabalu: The Jalan Lintas/Jalan Kolam and Jalan Tuaran Batu 5.5/Jalan Lintas flyovers are expected to be opened to the public in July next year.Infrastructure Development Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, in his winding-up speech at the State Assembly sitting on Thursday, said once opened, the flyovers will not only benefit road users at Jalan Lintas-Jalan Tuaran Bypass but also residents in Inanam, Likas, Luyang, Kolam, Bukit Padang, Bundusan and surrounding areas.

He also said they will ease traffic congestion and save people's time.

Meanwhile, he informed the Assembly that the State Cabinet had given the approval to his ministry to submit an application to the Transport Ministry on the formation of the National Transportation Council.

He said the application has already been approved by the Ministry and will be brought to the Federal Cabinet.

The Council, he said, will look into the overall weaknesses in land, sea and air transport which have been identified as the main cause of the high cost of living and business in Sabah.

He explained that the Council will have jurisdiction over all aspects of transport and logistic systems in the country and power over all government departments and agencies related to transport and logistics.

"The formation of the Council is in line with the empowerment agenda or devolution of powers to the State Government," he said.

He added that in the aspect of sea transport, the Council serves to ensure that shipping fare charges and port charges, including warehouse terminal handling charges, bunker surcharge and others, can be streamlined.

Port efficiency, he said, will also be increased especially on the movement per hour (MPH) for loading and unloading at all ports in the State.

He hoped with the formation of the Council, the issue relating to the Cabotage Policy can be resolved so that livelihood costs and business operation costs can be optimally reduced.
