Sabah Masters athletes romp to 47-gold haul

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah once again showed their superiority over the rest of the Malaysian teams with their total haul of 47 gold, 17 silver and 13 bronze medals at the just concluded Malaysia International Open Masters Athletics Championship (MIOMAC) held at University Malaya Stadium, Kuala Lumpur over the weekend. Sabah Masters Athletics Association President Aliudin Jumaat said the biggest gold medals contributors came from reigning Asian Masters champions Juliana Gumpil and Alfred Lajawa.

"Juliana and Alfred both won four gold medals each with Julian taking the 100m, long jump, triple jump and high jump titles while Alfred ruled in the 80-84 category's 100m, 200m, long jump and triple jump events."

Aliudin himself also delivered three gold medals together with teammates Narul Andau, Tay Yu Eng, Lucy Yong and Adeline Andau.

Other medal contributors were Chung Yung Khiong (2G, 1S, 1B), Gilbert Divancy (2 G, 1S, 1B), Tarmizi Sandhu (2G, 1S), Christina Labanjing (2G, 1S), Clarence Tami (2G), Charles Linggam (2G), Paul Fung (2G), Jiprin Jusdi (2G), Julius Komuning (2G),Vironica Elau (1G, 2S), Liaw Yin Von (1G), Tong Thu Choi (1G,1S), Mathmod Alidin (1G, 1S), Rahim Salamat (1G, 1S, 2B), Bernice Lau (1G, 1B), Joseph Latong (1S, 2B), Maulani Diman (1S), Pilah Kisang (3B), Saniban Ampilah (2B), Shamry Mohd Ali (1S, 1B), Yuman Sikin (1S), Maryem Joinol (1S), Susanna Hiew (1S), Women 4x100m (1S), Men 4x100m (1S).

Aliudin said the team could have won more gold medals if not for the late withdrawals of four athletes due to work commitments.

"Overall we are very happy with our achievement as we managed to upstage international teams and also other state teams in term of gold medals collected at the championships.

"The association would like to convey our appreciation and sincere thanks to Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan, Minister of Youth and Sports and his staff, State Sports Council and Sabah Sports Board for their invaluable support to the team."
