Security guard charged with raping lover's daughter, 14

GEORGE TOWN: A security guard appeared in two separate Sessions Court Tuesday to answer 11 charges of raping his lover's daughter.Meazmande Latiff, 38, claimed trial to six charges of raping the victim aged 14 years at a house in Teluk Kumbar here, between 1.30am on Aug 20 this year and 1.20am on Nov 5.He faces Section 376(1) of the Penal Code which provides for imprisonment of up to 20 years and whipping on each charge, on conviction.ADVERTISEMENT Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Huda Idris objected to bail, telling the court that the accused knew the victim and they lived under one roof.Judge Roslan Hamid did not allow bail and set Jan 10 next year for mention.Meazmande Latiff also claimed trial to five charges of raping the same victim at the same place, between 1.45am in September this year and 12.45am on Nov 19.Prosecuting officer Marysia Maklin also objected to bail for the accused.ADVERTISEMENT Judge Irwan Suainbon did not set any bail and fixed Jan 10 for mention.Meanwhile, in PUTRAJAYA, the Court of Appeal Tuesday upheld the conviction and death sentence on a businessman for the murder of a female marketing executive 10 years ago.

A three-man bench chaired by Justice Datuk Mohd Zawawi Salleh, in a unanimous decision, dismissed Shahril Jaafar's appeal.The 35-year-old man was appealing against the decision of the Alor Setar High Court on Aug 9, last year, in finding him guilty for murdering Chee Gaik Yap, 25, and on the death sentence imposed on him for the offence.In his decision, Justice Mohd Zawawi said the finding of the High Court was supported by evidence, adding that the trial judge did not commit any appealable error that warranted the Court of Appeal's intervention.The other two judges presiding on the bench were Justices Datuk Ahmadi Asnawi and Datuk Kamardin Hashim.Shahril was accused of committing the offence near Cinta Sayang Club in Taman Ria Jaya, Sungai Petani, between 5.30pm, Jan 14 and 3.05am, Jan 15, 2006.He was initially acquitted by the Alor Setar High Court on June 25, 2013 at the end of the prosecution's case without being called to enter his defence.However, on appeal by the prosecution, the Court of Appeal overturned the acquittal and ordered Shahril to enter his defence.Chee had gone jogging with her younger sister at Kelab Cinta Sayang when she was abducted.
