260 are screened in Tawau

Tawau: A total of 260 people were picked up for screening during a two-day integrated operation led by the National Security Council here.The operation which focused on 10 areas in the Tawau town area, Kalabakan and Merotai ended at about 9.30pm on Tuesday.

The operation involved inspections on kongsi houses, rented units, construction sites, estates and squatter settlements.

National Security Council Sabah Director Datuk Rodzi Md Saad said out of the figure, a total of 131 aged between two and 50, were detained further for documentation process.

The operation involved 120 officers and personnel from various agencies including the police, Civil Defence Force, Tawau Municipal Council, Immigration Department, National Registration Department and the Chief Minister's Department.

"The operation has been deemed successful because most of those screened were found to have proper documents and valid work permits, despite initial information which suggested that a majority may be without valid papers," he said.

He said those detained have been placed at the Tawau Temporary Detention Centre in Jalan Utara.

Over the same period, a total of 450 illegal immigrants aged between two and 50 were also deported via Sandakan Port.

The deportation process ended at about 9pm on Tuesday.

Those deported comprised 22 men from the Kota Kinabalu Temporary Detention Centre, 228 from the Sibuga Sandakan Temporary Detention Centre comprising 175 men, 44 women, six boys and three girls.
