Lahad Datu: A retired civil servant drowned after he was believed to have been attacked by a crocodile while diving for fish in the waters near the Jambatan POIC here, on Wednesday. The man was identified as 60-year-old Tiga Hari Madjami.

The incident was witnessed by a security guard who alerted the Fire and Rescue Department at about midnight.

District Fire and Rescue Station Chief Mohd Apandi Mahmood said a team was deployed to the scene located some nine kilometres away.

Operations ended at about 1.01am after the team discovered the body about 30 minutes upon arrival.

The remains was handed over to the police for further action.

Several crocodile attack cases have been reported in the State this year. In September the body of a plantation worker was found after he was said to be attacked by a crocodile while fishing in Kinabatangan.

That same month the body of a woman was found after she too was believed to have been attacked by a crocodile while collecting oil palm fruits along the banks of a canal in Ladang Genting Mewah in Kinabatangan.

In January this year, a plantation worker suffered serious injuries believed to be the result of a crocodile attack at the Jeragan Bistari plant in Lahad Datu.

Last year, a dog was reported to have been killed by a crocodile lurking in the muddy waters of a monsoon drain near the Sabah Museum in the State capital.
