Kuala Lumpur: The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has cancelled two friendly matches involving the Under-22 squad with Myanmar in Yangon, early next month. The national football governing body in its latest entry on Harimau Malaysia's twitter site, however, did not give any reasons for cancelling the matches scheduled for Dec 9 and 12.

The decision, however, is believed to be related to Myanmar government troops continued oppression of the Rohingya ethnic minority group in the north of the country.

The development was not unexpected as several individuals and non-governmental organisations had called on the government to boycott the AFF Suzuki Cup football championship preliminary round that was held in Myanmar from Nov 20 to 26.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin was reported as saying the Cabinet had decided to allow the Harimau Malaysia (national squad) to continue with the competition while the government looked at other approaches to oppose violence against the Rohingya people.

Malaysia, however, failed to enter the semi-finals of the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup after taking third place in the group-level competition. – Bernama
