Kota Kinabalu: A pedestrian was killed after a Perodua Viva ran her over near the Ministry of Communication and Multimedia Integrated Complex along Jalan Kepayan-Lintas here, on Saturday. The 76-year-old Sino Kadazan has been identified as Augusta Lojikim from Kg. Kepayan, who is survived by eight children.

The elderly woman's relative who wished to remain anonymous said the deceased was perhaps heading to a church nearby when the mishap took place at about 6am.

"She would normally cross the route to get to church for the morning service," said the relative.

The 24-year-old Viva driver escaped unscathed.

City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra said initial findings showed that the Viva was heading towards Manggatal from Kepayan.

The driver was said to have stepped on the brakes but could not avoid hitting the woman who was crossing the road.

The woman was pronounced dead by paramedics from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Meanwhile, two people suffered serious injuries and four others including a one-year-old girl were slightly injured in a collision between a Nissan van and a Perodua Axia, along Jalan Kg. Lakut-Papar, in Papar, Saturday.

The seriously injured was identified by the State Fire and Rescue Department as the 52-year-old van driver and his 55-year-old passenger.

Three other van passengers, comprising a 26-year-old woman, a 55-year-old man and the one-year-old girl sustained slight injuries.

The 50-year-old woman who drove the Axia also escaped with minor injuries in the 10.15am mishap.

Papar Police Chief DSP George Abdul Rakman said initial findings showed that the Axia was heading towards Papar town from Taman Nagapas when the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a bend.

The impact caused her vehicle to collide with the van which was heading towards Kg. Simpudu from Papar town.

He said all the victims received outpatient treatment.

The victims were assisted by a team from the Papar Fire and Rescue Department led by Sulaiman Minin who arrived at the scene located some five kilometres away at about 10.27am.

George reminded motorists to abide by the speed limit and traffic regulations at all times.

"Accidents can be avoided if motorists are more ethical and practice tolerance while on the road," he said.
