M'sia win Calisthenics World Cup

SEPANG: Seven months of intensive training paid off for the Malaysian team when they swept the Calisthenics World Cup 2016 championships in Bahrain.'Team Malaysia' comprises siblings Zulhilmi Nadzeri, 25, and Zulfadli, 20 and their friends, Shahrul Aizat Jasri, 20, Sheikh Amirul Adli Sheikh Gadaffi, 18, and Engku Mohamad Ikhwan Engku Shamsul, 18, who succeeded in defeating 10 teams such as the United Kingdom, United States, Mexico, Spain and Russia. Calisthenics or street exercise is a form of physical activity which is usually carried out in the gymnasium and also in an open area like recreational parks.An intense interest in the sport drove Zulhilmi and his younger brother to join the prestigious championship and they were ranked 11th in the world last year before forming 'Team Malaysia' about seven months ago.

"We trained four to five hours daily," Zulhilmi said upon their return at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport here Monday.He said they carried out various exercises such as jogging, skipping, planche, handstand and various other movements on the bar to strengthen their muscles. "We also communicated via social media to discuss, plan and organise various movements for the championships," he said, adding that 'Team Malaysia' defeated Spain, the 2015 champions in the final of the competition.The team took home US$10,000 (US$1 = RM4.44) and a trophy. Apart from that, they will automatically represent Malaysia for the championships next year.

Zulhilmi, who began dabbling in street exercises since July 2013 said 'Team Malaysia' would continue to train and make early preparations for the championship next year.
