RM1m boost for Chinese language studies
Kota Kinabalu: The launch of the Skycity mixed development project at a previously abandoned site in Karamunsing, Monday, saw Chinese schools in the State receiving a RM1 million boost for promoting the learning of Chinese. The developer, Homedesign Network, through its CEO CK Lee pledged to allocate RM500,000 for the purpose while the State Government matched the effort ringgit-for-ringgit.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, when launching the joint venture project, assured that the Sabah property market is still vibrant despite many having anticipated it to be slow in 2016.

He expected transactions in 2017 to increase in terms of value and stability in view of many new upcoming developments.

"It's my hope that the property sector will continue to grow and stay resilient in face of challenges," he said.

Skycity, a project by Homesign Network, is sited on six acres and would feature a five-star hotel, exclusive offices, a lifestyle shopping mall and two towers of residential suites once completed.

As a joint venture with the Ministry of Local Government and Housing Sabah (KKTP) Sdn Bhd, it is a revival and rescue project of a former development called "Taman Hartawan".

Musa was confident that the development would also benefit those who had previously purchased a property at the former development site.

He noted that due to its strategic location within the city centre, Skycity would benefit professionals and businesses keen to showcase their services and products to a range of customers, including those who prefer to shop or do business in a high quality and comfortable environment.

The area is also expected to see an expansion in transportation links, potentially turning Skycity into a lively area in the future.

He said the State Government's decision to focus on tourism, oil and gas and agriculture has led to a significant increase in terms of foreign direct investments into Sabah and this has translated into a flourishing economy, and resulted in an increase in demand for space.

"Those developing Skycity and marketing it must be able to leverage on the spin-off from growth we are seeing from these sectors. Some of the possibilities for Skycity to attract would be research and development institutes, health and education services as well as medium enterprises," he said.

He reiterated that Sabah is currently in a rapid economic development phase as part of the Economic Transformation Programme and the Sabah Development Corridor (SDC), which are facilitated locally by the Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority.

The real estate sector he said is seeing high demand due to the implementation of the SDC and prices for residential, commercial and industrial units are projected to increase by five to ten per cent next year.
