State golfers on course to retain SGA Cup

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah are on course to defend the SGA Cup as they took a two-point and 7-5 lead over Sarawak on the opening day of the 16th SGA Cup in Kuching on Tuesday.In the morning session, the team led by last week's Keningau Open winner Mitchelle Steel had 3 ½ points with the home side registering 2 ½ points on the board at the end of the foursome play.

The winning two points for Sabah came from Mitchelle and Safarrudin Abidin with a 2 and 1 victory over Mohd Lokman and Albert Goh, with the second from Albright Chong and Casper Loh who went 1-up against Lau Ching Leong and John Ling.

The 1 ½ points came from the three draws by Sheo Wei Meng/Christopher James, Chia Poh Guan/Elderick Chong, Alex Lau/Fazley Chua against Lee Ka Tung/Malcom Ting, Lee Ka Ching/Lim Beng Keat, Lee Ka Tiong/Johari Aman respectively.

The only victory for the hosts came from Lee Ka Ming/Aziol Teo who beat Duin Etin and Hillary Tan 3 and 2.

Sabah gained another point through Alex Lau and Fazley Chua who went 4-up against Johari Aman and Albert Goh while the ½ point was delivered by the pair of Mitchell Steel and Safarrudin Abidin against Azriol Teo and Lee Kah Ming.

Sarawak gained the two points from Lee Ka Tiong and Mohd Amirul who went 1-up against Sheo Wei Ming and Brandon Lai with the second from Lau Ching Leong and Lim Beng Keat where Sabah's youngster Christopher James and Mohd Zaeiq went 4 down in the encounter.
