Kota Kinabalu: Deputy State Secretary cum State Chief Information Officer Datuk Joseph Yuntavid said there was a need to increase the confidence level and trust of the public towards the smart government digital services in the face of information privacy and safety risks and concerns nowadays."Hence big data especially personal information and transactions must be protected from all forms of threats," he said at the launching of the Sabah Public Sector ICT Security Conference 2016 at Hotel Tabung Haji on Tuesday.

The event was organised by the State Computer Services Department as part of an ongoing initiative undertaken by the department in supporting the State Government's continuing efforts to safeguard State government information assets.

Joseph stressed that ICT safety is not a product or a static effort.

"Instead it's a continuous dynamic process that involves planning, application, management, monitoring and audit and improvement on the existing public sector information safety management system in line with the changing ICT security landscape of the future."

As such he said ICT safety initiatives such as organising ICT awareness and safety courses, promotion of ICT good practice, workshops and seminars and adhering to the State public sector ICT safety policy among others would be maintained and its implementation and enforcement increased.

Speaking to the media on the ICT programme itself Joseph said it was a State level ICT programme intended to strengthen awareness and a positive mindset on ICT at the department level in the State government as a whole.

"It is also a way to culturalise ICT among civil servants in the State to be more proactive in carrying out ICT programmes in the State especially in regards to ICT safety for State government agencies," he said.

State Computer Services Department Director cum State ICT Chief Security Officer and Organising Chairman Dr Mingu Jumaan said that ICT safety is something important in the context of digital information nowadays.

"Transactions nowadays are no longer 9am-5pm but 24 hours. So this is something for civil servants to be prepared and understand the need for information safety in government information especially during such transactions.

"The conference being held today is a step towards increasing their awareness on their roles in ensuring ICT safety," he added.
