Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Zone Escalator Safety Use campaign was launched here, Sunday. The programme is organised by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health in collaboration with the National Institute of Occupational, Safety and Health, MS Elevators Engineering and Imago Shopping Mall, here.

Dosh Director Mohd Zahari Hitam said the campaign aims to raise awareness among parents and children on escalator use safety in malls in view of the rising cases of escalator accidents of late.

"Exhibitions, education video and escalator use steps were shared and the programme covers 332 escalators across the State," he said.

According to him, four notices and 17 stop work orders were issued to operators who did not meet escalator safety standards.

"Several of these cases involve children using rubber shoes. Such shoes easily get stuck on escalators especially under the skirting and panels," he said.

He advised parents to be careful and constantly watch their children by ensuring they are standing on the right angle within the escalator's yellow lines, hands on the escalator belt and follow the rules of using the machine.

He noted all escalators in Malaysia are designed according to international standards like installation of safety features, emergency stop button, yellow demarcation line and skirting brush on both side of the panels.

Towards this end, Zahari advised premises owners to ensure the escalators installed in their establishments are maintained according to schedule and ensure they are working properly.
