Alor Setar: The Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) plans to "improve" the flow of the Moyog river in the Kibabaig area of Penampang so as to minimise the recurrence of flash floods along Jalan Datuk Pang Lima Banting.A DID spokesman said it would take three years to complete this improvement work.

"Once it is done, part of the water from upstream will be channelled to the Petagas river," he said, adding it hoped to launch this work very soon."

He said this was the second part of a project which also involved the construction of a by-pass drain along the road.

The drain, which was 900 metres long and 7 metres deep, was tentatively expected to be finished some time next year, according to him.

"The new drain will essentially block the excess water from finding its way onto the stretch during a high tide."

The spokesman was responding to a complaint about the drainage woes along the Jalan Datuk Pang Lima Banting, particularly at the junction leading to Taman Country Shangrila.

A Daily Express reader, said the stretch flooded when it rained heavily and was virtually impassable to those with small vehicles.

"Many of us have to leave our cars by the roadside and walk to our homes when there is a downpour," said Miriam.

She admitted that the drains were attended to in most cases, when complaints were made to the local authorities.

"These efforts only provide those of us who live here with temporary relief at best.

"A few months later we will be back to square one as the drains will overflow again."

Miriam said the residents there had wearied of asking the local authorities to improve the drains as their flood woes had been going on for years.
