Kota Baru: With the arrival of the rainy season in Kelantan, traders of 'putu halba', a traditional cake made from ground cassava and fenugreek, also sprout like mushrooms after the rain. As always, putu halba traders earn a lucrative income, up to RM500 per day.

The steamed round-shape cake with palm sugar and granulated sugar fillings, and which is eaten with grated coconut, is often sold in small stalls which open specially in the rainy season.

A trader, Mohd Rosli Ghani, 42, when met at his shop in Kampung Chawas, Tanah Merah, said the cake could only be found during the rainy season when cassava was easily available.

"People in the old days often planted cassava at the beginning of the year as food stock for the rainy season," he said.

When the rainy season starts, it would be harvested to avoid damage to the roots if submerged in water, Mohd Rosli said.

He said long queues at putu halba stalls were not unusual during the season.

"This cake is selling well, especially during heavy rain. I can get up to RM500 per day by just selling this cake," he said.

Another trader, Ramlah Hussin, 53, said she would not miss the opportunity to sell the snack when the season comes around.

"I can get between RM100 and RM200 per day," she said. – Bernama
