55 illegals nabbed in Kunak

Kunak: A total of 55 illegal immigrants were arrested during an integrated Ops Gasak conducted in three water villages here, on Wednesday.The villages are namely Kg. Pangkalan, Kg. Bakau and Kg. Pasilan.

Kunak Police Chief Supt Mohd Nasaruddin M. Nasir said a total of 350 people were screened during the operation led by the Eastern Sabah Security Command involving the police, army, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Immigration Department and the National Registration Department.

"Most of those arrested are Filipinos while the remaining are Indonesians," he said, adding that the operation went smoothly.

Those detained have been sent to the Sandakan Temporary Detention Centre.

He said the objective was to eradicate smuggling activities, presence of illegal immigrants and other cross border crimes.
