Search for fisherman in Semarang

Kota Kinabalu: A search and rescue operation has been mounted to trace a fishermen who went missing in the waters of Semarang off Labuan, on Tuesday.Mohd Helmi Otong, a Bajau in his 20s, went missing while out fishing. His fishing boat was discovered at about 4.30pm on Tuesday and it was believed that the boat he was in had capsized.

The boat was towed to the Sabah Fish Marketing Sdn Bhd (Safma) jetty here at 4.38am on Wednesday.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Sabah/ Labuan Regional Director First Admiral Mohd Zubil Mat Som said search and rescue teams were deployed to the site at about 1am.

He said the search covers 900 nautical miles and involved other agencies including the police air unit.

Search and rescue teams were alerted of the incident by the boat owner, Abdul Rahim Koton, who said one of his crew had not returned from a fishing trip.
