Ranau: The effects of the earthquake in the district on June 5 last year are still being felt by the people here after more than a year. The latest incident was the disruption of water supply to more than 5,000 people here due to a mud flood in the Liwagu river which caused a blockage in the Ranau Water Department intake point.

Water disruption happens whenever it rains in the foot of Mount Kinabalu and around Masilou, Kundasang where water flows into the Masilou A and Masilou B rivers and directly into the Liwagu river which often brings an avalanche of mud and rocks, sand and twigs that causes the water flow into the main intake tank to block.

Ranau Water Department engineer Khairul Faizi Abd Rahman, when contacted, said the clean water shortage in the district is caused by drainage blockage due to deposition of sand, stones and twigs.

"This situation makes it difficult for the department to clear the blockage where the personnel had to work hard the whole day to clear them.

"We apologise to the people in the district for any inconvenience due to the water supply shortage since Dec 6.

"We expect the supply to be fully restored in the near future if the weather improves," he said.
