Find new ways to address drug abuse: CM
Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said new ways and methods must be found to reduce the rate of drug addiction among youths in the State."I have asked Malaysian Drug Prevention Association (Pemadam) National Vice President and State Pemadam Chairman Datuk Jainab Ahmad's ministry, together with the National Anti-Drugs Agency, to find out new ways on how to fight this drug problem and discourage the youths from being involved with drugs.

"As such, I believe that empowering the community is important. We cannot fight this alone.

All parties must be involved indirectly and directly in efforts to fight this drug scourge.

The whole community must be involved in the fight against drugs.

"Some of us may think it's not serious yet but if we look at the reports we find that the situation is increasing rather than decreasing. This is not a good sign if many of the youths (in the State) are involved in drugs.

"There are cases where money from parents is stolen to buy drugs. So this is worrying."

He said this at the launching of the 2016 State-level community empowerment and fight against drugs programme, here, Thursday.

"Many of our children and youths are involved in drugs. We see in the newspapers and we see on the television where there are cases of drug addicts ending up killing their parents and grandparents due to drugs.

"For me, this is a dangerous situation and we do not want our children who are the future of the country to be damaged and irresponsible and a problem to the country. We realise that the younger generation are the asset and future of the country. However, if they are involved in drugs, then they no longer become an asset to the country."

Musa said the organisation of the programme was timely to remind the community that the drug problem must be faced firmly and together.

"This is important to ensure that the threat of drugs does not cause the downfall of society and destroy the minds and lives of the younger generation. The involvement and commitment of all in the programme clearly shows the unity and commitment of not compromising with the threat of drugs, the destroyer of our children's future."

He added that the programme was also the best platform to show the spirit of unity and togetherness of all parties in the fight against the number one enemy of the country and thus creating a society that is free of drugs.

Musa said the State Government will continue to give its support to the efforts of all parties, especially the National Anti-Drugs Agency, in carrying out various efforts and initiatives under the Government Transformation Programme.

"This includes transforming the treatment programmes and voluntary and inclusive rehabilitation with the setting up of the Caring Community House, anti-drugs movement squad and voluntarism with programmes at the community level."

He stressed that the efforts to fight drugs need to be carried out and continued at all levels of the community and not limited to during campaigns.

"What is important is the community empowerment approach or the ability of the community to give awareness on the role and responsibility of each community member in defending the community identity from the problem and threat of drugs."

Later, several leaders received community shield awards from Musa, including Tanjong Batu Assemblywoman Datuk Hamisah Samat, Merotai Assemblyman Datuk Pang Yuk Ming and Pemadam Kota Kinabalu Chairman and Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai.
