150 homeless in Putatan fire
Putatan: "Everything is gone, our home, our valuables, nothing is left but the clothes on our back."Ajis Tamat, a 39-year-old ex-serviceman, was relating his agony after he had rushed home, only to see his 11 years of hard-earned money going up in flames, on Wednesday.

He was among 150 squatters made homeless when fire destroyed 12 houses and at least two motorcycles in the squatter settlement in Kg Pituru 2 at Taman Pantai Lokawi, Sabindo, here.

"I was at work when my wife alerted me of the fire at about 6.25pm. It is sad to lose our valuables that way, but we are grateful to be safe and alive," said the father of six.

His 47-year-old neighbour, Hussin Amat, recalled hearing a commotion prior to the incident.

"I was watching television with my children when I heard my neighbour shouting for help, prompting me to rush out to see the fire coming from Ajis's house.

"I rushed into his house to try salvage whatever I could, but two minutes was all it took for me to rush back out, the thick smoke and heat from the flames was too much for me," he said.

Hussin, who sustained slight injuries to his abdomen, said there were several explosions as everyone fled to safety.

He said between 50 and 60 houses were spared from the fire, thanks to quick response from firefighters who brought the fire under control quickly.

A total of 24 firefighters from the Papar Fire and Rescue Department led by Dunstan Peter arrived at the scene, located 22 kilometres away, at about 6.52pm. Also at the scene to assist were firefighters from Kota Kinabalu and Penampang.

No casualties were reported in the fire which was brought under control at about 7.30pm.
