Kota Kinabalu: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sabah is open for negotiations with local-based opposition parties to reach an ideal target on fighting Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) one-on-one in the 14th General Election (GE14).Its Acting Chairman Christina Liew said the doors of PKR remain open for any possibilities of discussion to reach a win-win cooperation to go for straight fights.

"Absolutely, I agree with Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin, who is Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (Harapan Rakyat) President, for recommending that opposition parties go for a straight fight in contesting the seats if we want to beat BN in the next general election.

"Responding to this, our (PKR) doors are always open for negotiation with all opposition parties in Sabah and to work with any party that shares the same vision. I believe there is room for negotiations to reach the target of going against Umno and BN on a one-on-one basis in Sabah. Let's not close the doors yet," she said, Wednesday.

Lajim, who is also Klias Assemblyman, had recommended that local-based opposition parties contest the State seats while the peninsula-based opposition consider contesting only the parliamentary seats in Sabah.

"We want to make sure there is no political party monopolising certain number of seats because we believe each opposition party, including the peninsula-based ones, have their own strength in the State.

"Therefore, the upcoming cooperation or alliance must be long-term and based on a principle of win-win, honest and sincere in ensuring the rights, needs and interests of Sabah and the people are fully attended to," Lajim said after the official opening of Harapan Rakyat, Tuesday.

Liew said PKR is a national party that won many seats in the last general election in Sabah and the result showed Sabahans support the cause of reform in both the Federal and state governments.

"We will discuss the seats closer to the GE14, including about the most winnable seats.

It is the people's choice and not the party's choice in electing the candidates.

"Nonetheless, I am optimistic all the opposition parties can work together in facing Umno and BN in the next general election.

"Right now, we want to focus on setting up our election machineries in every constituency and training our political workers to be ready to face the forthcoming election. In fact, PKR Sabah election machineries have started mobilising last month," she said.
