Woman, 2 sons charged with hurting and exploiting maid

Seremban: A woman with disability and her son were charged in the Sessions Court here Thursday with trafficking in an Indonesian woman for purpose of exploitation.K. Kaliamah, 49, and S. Muhesh Kumar, 20, pleaded not guilty and claimed trial to the charge after it was read out before Judge Fathiya Idris.Kaliamah and Muhesh Kumar were jointly charged with trafficking in Koiriyah, 33, for purpose of exploitation, at their house in Taman Jimah Jaya, Port Dickson between October and December this year.

The charge, under Section 12 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, which provides an imprisonment for up to 15 years, and is liable to fine, if found guilty.The prosecution, conducted by deputy public prosecutor Norhafizah Harun, offered bail of RM20,000 for each of the accused.However, lawyer M. Sivam, representing the two family members, requested for a lower bail on the grounds that it was their first offence and that it was unlikely that they would flee as they had a business.Fathiya then set bail of RM10,000 in one surety each and ordered the case to be heard jointly with another case involving the two accused.

The court set Jan 3 for mention.Prior to that, Kaliamah, Muhesh Kumar and another son, S. Shashikumar, 25, were charged in the Port Dickson Magistrate's Court with voluntarily causing hurt on Koiriyah.
