Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) plans to mount a large-scale operation to deal with the frequent outages around the State Capital.A SESB spokesman said maintenance work on its overhead lines servicing Kota Kinabalu is part of this operation.

"This will be done at 47 locations, including Kolombong," he said.

He, however, declined to specify when this work was expected to begin and how long it would take to complete.

On a complaint about disruptions which have affected some businesses around Kolombong, he said a check of its records revealed that a technical fault was to blame for these occurrences.

"The problem was traced to a feeder servicing the area. The power to this installation was found to be tripping.

"Action was taken to rectify this problem as soon as we became aware of it." The spokesman apologised, on behalf of SESB, for the inconvenience caused by the blackouts.

He was responding to the frustrations expressed by two Kolombong proprietors.

Both maintain that they have lost a substantial amount of business because of the load-shedding carried out by SESB.

While they understand that it is an unavoidable inconvenience, they cannot understand why the disruptions always take place around the same period during business hours.

An eatery operator at the Paramount Industrial Centre said the power to the premises went off at around 9.30am almost daily.

"The blackout generally lasts for three hours. This has been going on for several days," he said.

A worker identified only as Wong at a commercial centre along Jalan Kolombong said no work could be accomplished at the premises in the afternoons when the blackouts normally occurred.

"The power goes off at lunch time and is only restored around 4 or 5pm," he said, adding that this had gone on for more than a week.

He said during the first such outage, he and his colleagues came back from lunch and could not get into the office because the automated shutters did not function without electricity.
