Ramli takes over as the new Sabah CP
Kota Kinabalu: Former Malacca Police Commissioner Datuk Ramli bin Din assumed duties as the new Sabah Police Commissioner, Tuesday, replacing Datuk Abd. Rashid Harun who is retiring.Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim witnessed the handing over between Rashid and Ramli at the Sabah police headquarters in Kepayan.

Ramli from Kubang Pasu, Kedah, promised to continue the legacy left by Rashid during his tenure as State Police Commissioner.

"I am grateful for this promotion as the new Sabah Police Commissioner but I also realise the huge and challenging responsibilities I have to shoulder.

"Hence, I seek full cooperation from all the senior officers and all personnel in the Sabah police force and Perkep Sabah (Sabah Family Police Association) members to empower and enhance all planned operations," he said.

Rashid said he was confident in Ramli and his leadership in handling various challenges and threats in Sabah.

He also called on the Sabah police to render their fullest cooperation to Ramli.

Noor Rashid said security forces are still making efforts to negotiate through a third party for the release of five Malaysian fishermen who were kidnapped from the Lahad Datu waters in July last year.

Abdul Rahim Summas, 62, Tayuddin Anjut, 45, Mohd Ridzuan Ismail, 32, Fandy Bakran, 26, and Mohd Zumadil Rahim, 23 were abducted from a tugboat on July 17.

"Bukit Aman is monitoring and will assist in securing their safe release," he said.

He said the five hostages are safe and believed to be in the Southern Philippines.

On Sabah's curfew order from dusk to dawn, Noor Rashid said this is still relevant in Sabah.

However, he said the decision to implement the curfew order would be discussed by the police and the government.

"We will always evaluate the level of security in Sabah from time to time and we would look into the implementation of this curfew order as we know that it does affect the daily activities of the local communities in the areas declared under curfew.

"The curfew order in Sabah still relevant and it is not simply executed as discussions would be held between the police and concerned authorities," Noor Rashid.

Meanwhile, outgoing Abd Rashid Harun who was in the police force for 41 years, eight months and eight days, launched his biography titled "Abd. Rashid Harun: Antara Kedaulatan dan Pengorbanan' (Abd. Rashid Harun: Between Sovereignty and Sacrifice).

It was by a six-member team from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) headed by its Vice-Chancellor Prof. Datuk Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah to appreciate Rashid's dedication, contribution and commitment while serving in Sabah.

Rashid, 60, who was also the former Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) Commander, is the first Sabah Police Commissioner to have its biography published in the State.

The 117-page biography documents his personal life and his involvement in the police force as well as his valuable experiences in the Tanduo, Lahad Datu incursion in 2013 and while serving as the Esscom Commander in safeguarding security at the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone) before being appointed Sabah Police Commissioner.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, who launched the biography at the Senior Police Officers Mess, here, said he was impressed with the commitment shown by Rashid and excellent record of performance throughout his service in leading the police force in the State.

He also congratulated Rashid and UMS for successfully publishing the biography that will be very useful and important to the next generation and the people in Sabah.

"I laud the noble initiative of publishing the biography that discloses the life journey of a high ranking police officer on his experiences, success and sacrifices throughout his career in the police force for over four decades.

"I believe this initiative is the best approach that could instil love, loyalty and patriotism for our beloved country among the public as well as in understanding the roles, challenges and risks that the security forces have to face.

"At the same time, the book would greatly benefit and inspire the police force to enhance their efforts and motivate them to succeed especially lower rank police personnel and officers given that Rashid started his career as a constable and worked hard until appointed as Sabah Police Commissioner," Musa said.

He also described Rashid as a police officer whom he (Musa) could work with easily and discuss anything in terms of providing the best security measures for Sabah.

Earlier, Rashid said the police and security forces in Sabah never expect any praise when discharging their duties and responsibilities to protect the sovereignty of the nation while facing various threats including cross-border crimes.

He hoped that public would not simply judge or insult the police force if their expectations are not met as they are doing their very best to do carry out their duty and responsibilities in protecting Sabah and the people.

Rashid also thanked Musa and the people of Sabah for facilitating and accommodating him throughout his service in Sabah since 2013 as Esscom Commander and Sabah Police Commissioner.
