Robotics competition for universities and colleges

Kota Kinabalu: The first Malaysia Open VEX Championship 2017 (MOVC2017) will be organised to allow universities and colleges in Malaysia compete in the fast growing robotics competition.The event will be organised by the Multimedia University (MMU), Centillion Robotics Youth on Unity at Multimedia University in Melaka on February 17-19.It is expected to attract more than 30 teams comprising students from primary to secondary schools, competing in the VEX IQ Challenge, and the VEX Robotics Competition; and university students for the VEX U competition. ADVERTISEMENT It will be three full days of robotics matches hosted at the university. The competition last year saw 20 teams taking part. Multimedia University Chief Executive Officer Prof. Datuk Dr. Ahmad Rafi Mohamed Eshaq said MMU is confident that robotics and automation will become a greater part of life in Malaysia, both in commercial and home settings. "We stand on the brink of a technological revolution that will fundamentally change the way we live and work.ADVERTISEMENT Robotics is one of the breakthroughs of this fourth Industrial Revolution, and we are excited to be at the forefront of this change. "The very presence of our students in MMU's robotics and automation programme proves that the public is also increasingly aware of that fact, and we are very happy that our students are not only studying the programme, but have also decided to apply what they have learned by organising the Malaysia Open VEX Championship 2017," he said.

The MOVC2017 is one of a series of VEX IQ Challenges and VEX Robotics Competitions, taking place internationally throughout the year. The VEX is one of the fastest growing competitive robotics programmes for primary schools and secondary schools, and universities around the world, with more than 16,000 teams from over 40 countries participating in more than 1,500 competitions worldwide. The competition season culminates in April, with the VEX Robotics World Championship to be presented by the Northrop Grumman Foundation and the REC Foundation. There, the top qualifying teams from around the world will battle it out at the international VEX Robotics event to be crowned as the World Champions. The REC Foundation's holds numerous additional events in Malaysia and Asia, offering students more opportunities to compete locally and at a regional level. Its President, Jason Morella believed preparing children for the future global economy will require a strong foundation in STEM education. "Robotics engineering programmes naturally engage and inspire students to pursue STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects and careers and we are committed to providing students access to exciting and challenging competition experience, like the VEX IQ Challenge and the VEX Robotics Competition, to accommodate their growing interest," he said.
