Keningau: PKR Council of Elders Deputy Chairman Robert Linggi urged the government to reconsider making it compulsory for employers to pay the levy of foreign workers.Under the new ruling, employers would no longer be able to deduct the wages of their foreign workers for the levy.Linggi said such ruling would increase the burden carried by employers especially when the ringgit has yet to reach stability.ADVERTISEMENT "For example, it would take about RM2,500 to make a work pass for a foreign worker which is not inclusive of other costs," he said.Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi recently announced that the new ruling which came into effect on Jan 1, comes under an Employer Mandatory Commitment (EMC), aimed to ensure that employers are fully responsible for their foreign workers.Ahmad Zahid who is also Deputy Prime Minister, said the commitment would be in effect from the application stage right up until the foreign worker is sent back to his country of origin.Linggi also questioned the recent increase in fuel prices, saying that it would jeopardise the whole economic structure of Malaysia, especially in transportation.ADVERTISEMENT Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
