Pitas floods begin to recede
Kota Kinabalu: Floods in several low-lying areas in Pitas started to recede as the weather turned sunny on Thursday. Floodwaters began to subside after rain stopped at 2.15pm on Wednesday, despite a slight drizzle at 5.30am on Thursday.

Floods in four affected villages, namely Kg Bilangau Besar, Kg Salimpodon Darat, Kg Pinggan-Pinggan and Kg Indah had also gone down at press time.

Sabah Civil Defence Force Director Col. Mulliadi Al-Hamdi Ladin said several routes were also passable to vehicles except for the main route at Kg Kusilad which was only passable to heavy vehicles and four-wheel-drives as at 4pm.

Other main routes affected by the floods included Kg Salimpodon Darat, Kg Indah, Kg Pandan Mendamai, Kg Layang Kanibongan, Kg Sosop, Kg Boribi Kanibongan, Kg Pondoi and Kg Kibuluh.

The water level along these routes at press time showed a reading of between 0.1 metre and 0.5 metres.

He said the flood evacuation centre at the Dewan Terbuka Kg Bilangau Besar was also officially closed at 4pm.

The water levels in several main rivers also started to ease with the level at Sungai Kebatasan at 4.97 metres (alert level), while the water level at Sungai Bengkoka read at 3.04 metres (warning level).

He said a total of 178 flood victims remained sheltered in two flood evacuation centres which remained opened as at 5pm.

The flood victims are namely 45 families comprising 168 people sheltered at SR Rukom in Kg Rukom Ulu and four families comprising 10 people sheltered at Dewan SK Pekan 2 at Kg Sinasak Batu.

"Flooding currently experienced in the State is the impact from the northeast monsoon (October 2016-March 2017)," said Mulliadi, adding that it is not only experienced in Sabah but also in several other states in country.

Meanwhile, State Secretary Tan Sri Sukarti Wakiman, who is Chairman of the State Disaster Relief Committee, together with Industrial Development Assistant Minister Datuk Bolkiah Ismail, who is Pitas Assemblyman, also went down to the ground to monitor the situation.

They were accompanied by Ko-Nelayan Chairman Datuk Abd Mijul Unaini who is Banggi Assemblyman, Pitas District Officer Bubudan O.T. Majalu and Mulliadi.

Pitas is the latest district to be hit in view of the monsoon season after Penampang and Kota Belud last month.
