Consul gives thumbs-up to Sabah
Kota Kinabalu: Chen Peijie, the Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu, commended the Chinese community in Malaysia, Sabah in particular, for their dedication in preserving Chinese culture.Speaking to a delegation from the Federation of Chinese Associations Sabah (FCAS) during a courtesy call on Friday, she acknowledged that Malaysia is the country other than China which managed to preserve Chinese culture well.

Also present was FCAS Vice President I Datuk Susan Wong, who is the Organising Chairperson for the 2017 Chinese New Year Carnival.

"You have not only spent money and energy but also your valuable time in promoting Chinese cultural events like the annual Chinese New Year Carnival. We sincerely hope that you will continue with such effort, perpetually," she said.

She added that such achievement also reflected well on the unity and commitment among the Chinese communities in the State, when comes to preservation and promotion of Chinese culture.

She was especially impressed with the spirit and tireless dedication of FCAS in preserving Chinese culture through organising of cultural events like the Chinese New Year Carnival and the annual Sabah International Dragon Boat Race, all these years.

She reckoned that these events would facilitate a better understanding and appreciation of the Chinese culture and traditions among the younger generation of Sabah Chinese who would eventually become the torchbearers for such a noble effort.

She believed this would also give the tourists from China a lasting impression on Sabah.

Chen also expressed her gratitude to the Chinese community of Sabah for their warm treatment ever since she took office on Jan. 30, 2015.

Meanwhile, FCAS President Datuk Seri Panglima TC Goh expressed FCAS' fervent aspiration to maintain close cooperation with Chen's office, especially as a partner in promoting stronger bilateral ties between China and Malaysia.

"The Consul General's office can always disseminate important messages concerning the Republic of China and the Chinese government through us. At the same time, we too will play our part in conveying the messages and aspirations of the Sabah Chinese community to the Chinese government, in order to strengthen bilateral ties between Malaysia and China," said Goh.

He said in future FCAS hoped to extend, through the Consul General's office, its invitation to the people of the Republic of China to come and participate in programmes and activities organised by the Sabah Chinese community.

He also hoped China could deploy cultural troupes to perform at the coming Chinese New Year Carnival.

The four-day Chinese New Year carnival jointly organised by FCAS and Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) will be held at the Padang Merdeka here from Jan. 23 to 26.

It will be officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman on Jan. 23 and the closing ceremony on Jan. 26 will be officiated by Minister of Special Tasks, Datuk Teo Chee Kang.

There will be a host of interesting programmes including performances by local talents from various local schools and Chinese clan associations, exciting performances by the local dragon and lion troupes, besides a series of competitions such as the Talent Competition, singing and dancing competition, and a Cheongsam pageant contest to keep everyone entertained.

In addition, there will also be a wide range of mouth-watering Chinese traditional foods and Chinese New Year goodies and merchandises available for purchase at the hawker stalls.

Meanwhile, Goh said this year, its Chinese New Year gathering will be held at the Wisma Hakka Auditorium on Feb. 1.

He called on leaders and members of the Chinese community and corporations to come forward to support the said event by purchasing tickets for the banquet tables, ranging from RM800 to RM1,000 per table.

To keep the guests entertained during the occasion, the organiser has lined up a host of interesting programmes, including performances by local artists, lucky draws and auspicious greetings by the God of Fortune, etc.
