Kota Kinabalu: Aerial inspections by the State Civil Defence Force Drone Squad showed the flood situation in the majority of villages in low-lying areas in Pitas had started to ease on Saturday. Sabah Civil Defence Force Director Col. Mulliadi Al-Hamdi Ladin said the inspections were conducted over the affected areas, namely Kg Rukom Ulu, Kg Kusilad and Kg Kanibongan.

The district is the latest to be hit in view of the monsoon season after Penampang and Kota Belud last month.

A total of 45 families comprising 168 people from Kg Rukom Ulu, who were sheltered at Dewan SK Rukom Pitas, received donations from Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad who paid a visit to the district.

Donations were also distributed to flood victims in Kg Kabatasan and Kg Sinasak Batu.

Her ministry under its Social Programme also donated shoes and school stationeries to 53 pupils affected by the flood.

With her was Industrial Development Assistant Minister Datuk Bolkiah Ismail who is Pitas Assemblyman, Pitas District Officer Bubudan O.T. Majalu who is Pitas Disaster Relief Committee Chairman and his Disaster Relief Committee Secretariat Staff Bakrin Shamsuddin.

In a statement here, Jainab expressed her support for Bolkiah's proposition that it was high time a Crisis Management Team be set up in areas prone to disaster.

"Sufficient manpower and equipment is greatly needed in times of natural disasters.

This is to ensure disaster victims receive the assistance they need.

"I also welcome statutory bodies, associations and corporations to channel assistance according to the needs of the victims," she said.

She urged all parties to assist the Government in lending a hand by contributing their energy, money, ideas and expertise.

"What I see is the need for clean water especially during floods, because the water supply might not be clean," she said.
