Kota Kinabalu: All running event organisers in the State are required to apply for their licence from the Sports Commissioner office starting April 1.Director of State Sports Commissioner Mu'Azamir Jili said this after a meeting with some of the organisers here at the Likas Sports Complex on Monday.

He said they will start to enforce Section 36 (1) of the Sports Development act on that date which stated that a company shall not involve itself in any sporting activity or in any other activity related to sports, as may be prescribed by the Minister in the regulations, unless it is licensed to do so by the Commissioner.

"This is the directive from the Sports Ministry under Khairy Jamaluddin so that the events are organised more professionally.

"There were many cases in the past where events were cancelled at the eleventh hour due to mismanagement by the organisers or they were unable to fulfil their promises and the government had to step in.

If it is an international event, then it will subsequently tarnish the image of the country.

"Also in some cases, some organisers will utilise the social media to promote themselves and once they have reached their target, they will close down the page and take the money and run. So that is why we have to step in to ensure that everything will be in order and the organisers will follow the guideline and apply for the licence.

"Our motive is to see only those who are qualified to organise the event especially in terms of their financial ability.

And there are also exceptions such as those given mandate by State agencies to organise which I will not have any problems with as they must have the budget allocated in the first place."

He disclosed that the act was supposed to be enforced on January 1 this year but some organisers were not prepared and it was then postponed to the new date where they will need to apply for the licence in order to host an event.

He also warned that those without licence issued by them will not be able to apply for permits from the relevant authorities such as the Police.
