Drugs: Navy personnel fined RM4,000

Kota Kinabalu: A 30-year-old navy personnel was fined RM4,000 or 15 months' jail by the Magistrate's Court for having 1,625.5gm of Mitragynine, a drug type found in Ketum leaves.Mohd Hafizudden Mohd Johari pleaded guilty before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun to having the drugs at 4.40pm on May 8, 2015 by the roadside in front of an abandoned building along Gaya Street here.Inspector Rasydan Jasni, prosecuting, told the court that, Hafizudden was detained by police for behaving suspiciously while holding a package.ADVERTISEMENT When asked whether he was carrying any unlawful items, Hafizudden told the police that there were Ketum leaves in the package.The package was found to contain two courier service boxes with Ketum leaves in 12 newspaper wraps.The leaves were then sent to the Chemistry Department for analysis and confirmed to have 1,625.5gm of Mitragynine, a drug listed in the First and Third Schedule (Psychotropic substance) of Poison Act 1952.Hafizudden had committed an offence under Section 30(3) of the Poison Act 1952 which provides for a fine of up to RM10,000 or a jail term of up to four years jail or both on conviction.ADVERTISEMENT Earlier, counsel Nazim Maduarin, representing Hafizudden, requested for a non-custodial sentence on the grounds that the navy personnel had seen disciplinary action taken against him where he was suspended from work since July 2016.Nazim also told the court that Hafizudden was only helping his friend to take the package but the friend had fled to the peninsula.
