26 loan sharks nabbed, RM2m seized

Kuala Lumpur: Police arrested 26 individuals suspected to be members of the "Ah Long" gang or loan sharks who resorted to violence to collect debts in Johor Baru and Ipoh, Perak.In the operation which began from 10pm until 4am Thursday, 23 local men and three women, including a Vietnamese, were arrested.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department Director Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said those detained were aged between 17 and 51 years.

"We seized 21 luxury vehicles of various brands worth about RM1.4 million and RM416,050 in cash," he said here, Thursday.

He said also seized were 18 women designer handbags worth RM150,000 as well as 83 ATM cards, 17 bank books, nine machetes and nine samurai swords.

Acryl Sani said value of confiscated property during the entire operation was estimated at RM2 million.

He said the syndicate attracted "customers" by pasting advertisement and distributing pamphlets in residential and commercial areas in the southern part of the peninsula around Johor besides resorting to violence by intimidating and splashing paint when collecting money.

According to him the borrowers would be charged high interests of between 10 to 15 per cent and offered new loans to help settle the loan.

Meanwhile, in TAIPING, Perak, police arrested a 23-year-old man and seized an assortment of drugs valued at RM15,000 as well as a car, a motorcycle and RM1,020.

Taiping Police Chief ACP Harith Kam Abdullah said Thursday the trader was picked up at a hotel in Jalan Kota at 4.30pm and was being held under remand for five days from Thursday for investigation.

Police found an aluminium foil containing 10 Erimin 5 pills in a trouser pocket of the man.

"Police also found a paper bag containing 112 aluminium foils that had 1,120 Erimin 5 pills as well as a transparent plastic packet containing 40 plastic packets that had Ketamine in a room in the hotel," he said in a statement.

Harith Kam said police also seized a Nissan Almera car valued at RM50,000, a Honda Wave motorcycle valued at RM2,000 and RM1,020 which were believed to have been obtained from the sale of drugs.

He also said that man was believed to be a drug trafficker in the area.
