Kota Kinabalu: Aquatic sports associations and clubs in the State has been urged to give a special attention to the development of swimming and diving, especially among young children.Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan said the related organisations should promote the sports so that the involvement of children in them will be enhanced.

"These young children can be developed to become future athletes who can be brought to greater heights.

"I also hoped the capabilities of our coaches can be improved and they can use the available facilities, equipment and methodology with the incorporation of sport science services provided by the National Sports Institute (ISN).

"The training should comply with the latest progress and ideology, suitable for each age group so that these young athletes will not be burned out and their interest for the sport can blossomed continuously," he said during the opening of the 50th Sabah Invitational Age Group Swimming Championship (SAG), at the Likas Sports Complex, here, on Thursday.

His speech was read by Sabah Sports Board Chairman Datuk Louis Rampas.

Tawfiq also said that his Ministry has always put much emphasis on the continuous development of aquatic sports, including diving.

"Our aim is to produce a group of high-disciplined, confident athletes that could heightened the State's image not only in the country but also in the world.

"I hope the young talents discovered in SAG can follow the footsteps of our previous athletes."

Looking back at the past achievements, Tawfiq said swimming has contributed a number of excellent accomplishments in any championship and "we were once one of the powerhouses of swimming."

"Thanks to the effort of the related association with the help of the Ministry, parents and athletes, the State had produced high achievers in swimming like Alex Lim and Elvin Chian, among others, who had represented Malaysia in prestigious international meets like the SEA Games, Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games.

"The government has always been proud with their achievements and contributions and we will continue provide support to them whether they are still an athlete or had retired from competitive swimming.

"In fact some of them had become coaches and I hope we can revive the golden era of the State in swimming through their guidance," he said.

Some 318 swimmers aged below 22 from nine associations and clubs in Sabah and Labuan participated in three-day championship which kicked off on Thursday. SAG is organised by the Sabah Aquatic Sports Association.
