Kota Kinabalu: More than 1,000 participants are expected to take part in the National Inter-State and Inter-School Malaysian Global Taekwondo Federation (MGTF) Championship to be held here in early May.MGTF Sabah President Christopher Wee said this will be the first time for Sabah to host the tournament.

"The exact date for the championship will be finalised after a meeting on Saturday (Jan 14) and entries will open on Sunday (Jan 15).

"We hope to do our best as this our first time hosting it," he said during a press conference at the Community Development and Consumers Affairs Ministry's office, here, on Thursday.

The tournament is co-organised by MGTF and the Community Development and Consumers Affairs Ministry with the help of the Youth and Sports Ministry and other agencies.

According to him, the top teams in the country like Selangor, Penang, Pahang and Terengganu are expected to participate in the championship, apart from Sabah.

Meanwhile, MGTF Sabah patron Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid who is also Community Development and Consumers Affairs Minister said the competition will emphasise youths' active involvement in beneficial activities.

"We aim to focus on self-defence and social illnesses through the competition.

My Ministry is involved in the competition as part of our NBOS (National Blue Ocean Strategy) approach.

"I see that social illnesses like drug abuse and vandalism among youths are still prominent in the State.

"We, as parents, in our desire to pursue wealth, tend to forget the biggest asset in our lives – our children.

"As such, my Ministry would like to put public awareness on the importance of taking care of children back into focus this year," she said.

Apart from that, she said the tournament will bring a positive boost to the tourism industry in Sabah.

"We can promote the State as a sport tourism destination through such competitions… when they take part in these tournaments, they will also visit interesting tourism spots around Sabah."

Jainab also said more updates on the championship will be posted via Facebook and other social media platforms soon.
