Penampang: Umno will help get the necessary funding from the Federal Government for the completion of the St. Catherine's Church in Putatan.Umno Penampang Chief Datuk John Ambrose said it would be a pity if the St Catherine's Church could not be completed due to the lack of funding.

"Umno Penampang will seek Putrajaya's help to provide funding so that the church can be completed soon," he said at the Penampang Parish Christmas and New Year Open House at St Michael's Church's Parish Hall organised jointly by the Parish, Umno, KDCA and BN component parties.

The St. Catherine's Church is the brainchild of Penampang Parish Rector Fr. Fundes Motiung to accommodate the fast-growing Catholic community in Putatan and Lok Kawi due to the surge of development of new townships, industries and housing projects.

The construction of the church was implemented in January 2013 at a cost of about RM7 million.

Ambrose said he would meet up with Fr. Fundes soon to discuss how much is still needed to get the church completed.

"There is a church building committee and they have also taken the initiative to raise funds for the completion of the church and hopefully Umno Penampang would be able to help get Putrajaya to chip in whatever is needed," he said.

Meanwhile, Ambrose said he was happy that the open house was a success attracting more than 5,000 people of various racial and religious backgrounds.

"It shows that Sabah is a harmonious, multiracial and multicultural society where all races of different religious backgrounds can sit down and celebrate one another's festivals.

"Religious and ethnic issues are virtually non-existent in Sabah and no communities would try to raise sensitive issues to harm others. Sabah is truly 1Malaysia.

"The State Government under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, treats every community fairly and is concerned about the development of all religions and the same goes to the Federal Government under the stewardship of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak," he said.

Ambrose said the attendance of Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak, who is also National Umno Treasurer, is a fine example that Umno is not anti-Christian as labelled by the opposition.

"The Federal and State Governments are helmed by Umno and for years have continued to provide allocations to churches and mission schools. An anti-Christian government will not do that," he said.
