Sex crimes: Man's sentence reduced to 35 years, 24 strokes

Kota Kinabalu: A 31-year-old local man jailed a total of 55 years and ordered to get 25 lashes of the cane on three counts of sex crimes against minors, saw his sentence reduced to a total of 35 years' jail and 24 strokes of the cane here Monday.Court of Appeal Justices Dato' Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, Datuk Vernon Ong Lam Kiat and Dato' Abdul Rahman Sebli allowed Petrus Jung's appeal against his imprisonment sentence as well as allowed the cross-appeal by the prosecution to have the whipping sentence amended.Petrus, who was not represented, requested for the jail term to run concurrently saying he had a family and felt remorse serving the sentence in prison.

On Jan 5, 2016, the High Court maintained the total jail sentence of 55 years imposed on him after hearing his appeal but increased the whipping sentence to 25 lashes from 15 strokes.Petrus, a rubber tapper from Kota Marudu, had on Oct 5, 2015 pleaded guilty to all charges at the Sessions Court and was jailed 20 years and ordered caned six times for raping an 11-year-old girl and at the same time causing hurt to the victim at 1.40pm on June 19 this year in the bushes at a village in Kota Marudu.He was handed 20 years' jail plus six strokes of the cane on the second count of raping another 11-year-old girl and at the same time placing her under death threat at 1.30pm on July 7, 2014 in the woods of a village in Kota Marudu.On the fourth count, Petrus received another 15 years' jail and three lashes of the cane for trying to rape a 12-year-old girl and at the same time causing hurt to her at 10.30am on June 27 this year in the bushes at a village in Kota Belud.

He was ordered to serve the sentence consecutively.The High Court had increased the whipping sentenced to five, 10 and ten lashes on the first, second and third count, respectively.

On Monday, the appellate court, ordered Petrus to serve the jail term on the first and second count concurrently and ordered the sentence on the third count to run consecutively with the first two counts.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
