Kota Kinabalu: Local radio station, KupiKupifm 96.3 FM, is starting off the year with a social responsibility programme to assist the poor in Pensiangan by improving water catchment areas and providing LED solar lamps. This is the radio station's second 'Operasi Kerja Komuniti 96.3 FM' CSR programme, after previously having done a water supply restoration project for residents affected by the 2015 earthquake in Ranau.

Radio station Programme Manager Lester Calvin Miol said over 200 Solar LED lamps will be circulated in Kampung Buntulon and upgrades on two catchment areas will be made in the same village and alongside, Kampung Salung, located in the Pegalungan sub-district, over 170km from here.

"The work will involve improving the two catchment areas, installing gravity pipelines into the villages, as well as installing water tanks for the residents," he said during a press conference on the CSR programme here on Tuesday.

Also present at the press conference were PBRS Deputy President Arthur Kurup and the ETCM's Sales Target Compliance Deputy Head Ling Kok Onn.

The two-day programme will begin on Jan 21 and will run concurrently with a planned one-day mini concert and karaoke competition at the Pegalungan town to be officiated by the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Joseph Kurup, he said.

Miol said the initiative was supported by the Central Wanita MCA, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) Pensiangan and auto sales company, Edaran Tan Chong Motor Sdn Bhd (ETCM), which sponsored three pick-up trucks to transport the materials needed for the initiative.

Meanwhile, Arthur said the Pegalungan sub-district has a population of 3,000 with a majority of them being Murut from the low income group, hunting, fishing and farming for their livelihood.

"Over the last four years, PBRS had done all it could to bring development into eight villages in Pegalungan.

This includes providing treated water supply and building a water treatment plant in town which presently only serves the main village.

"So we need the assistance from people like KupiKupi FM and MCA to bring over the pipes and extend water supply to the other villages," said Arthur, adding that a communication tower was built there recently and this allowed residents to enjoy among others, the Internet.

He also challenged the radio station to help promote local talents and saw the radio station taking up the task.

Towards this end, Miol said: "We want local talents to come pass their creation (CDs) to us at the mini concert and we will give them air time."
