6,000 in Marudu forced to skip school
Kota Kinabalu: Over 6,000 students, largely in the Kota Marudu area, were not able to attend school due to flooding on Wednesday. Rain on Tuesday night caused floods in Kota Marudu and Pitas and forced the closure of 21 primary schools and a secondary school the next morning.

Education Director Datuk Maimunah Suhaibul said the closure would depend on the flooding situation.

"We want the students to take care of themselves during the crisis and the department will salvage whatever school property," she said.

The affected schools are SK Langkon, SK Masalog, SK Ranau, SK Tumunda Salimandut, SK Pekan Kota Marudu, SK Mengaris, SK Koromoko, SJKC Khoi Ming, SK Tandek, SK Ongkilan, SK Timbang Batu, SK Marak Parak, SK Tanjung Batu, SK Temung Teringai Darat, SK Talantang, SK BIntasan, SMK Langkon.

In Pitas the affected schools are SK Pandan Mandamai, SK Pinapak, SK Mandurian, SK Nibang and SK Dandun.

A total of 5,965 primary school pupils, 662 secondary school students and 605 teachers are affected by the flooding.

A total of 851 families comprising 2,874 people had to be evacuated to 11 flood evacuation centres.

Sabah Civil Defence Force Director Col. Mulliadi Al-Hamdi Ladin said teams have been deployed to the area to assist and monitor the situation.

A total of 17 villages affected by the floods are Kg. Longob, Kg Beliajung, Kg Bengkongan, Kg Talantang 1, Kg Mosolog, Kg Magaratong, Kg Rakit, Kg Morion, Kg Piso, Kg Salimandut, Kg Asin-Asin, Kg Lotong, Kg Parong, Kg Gorontong, Kg Pancur and Kg Hatob.

Flood victims are being sheltered at SK Taritipan, Balairaya Talantang, Dewan Kg Morion, Balairaya Pancur, Dewan Mosolog and Dewan Hatob. As at 5.25pm, the water level in Sungai Bongon read at 7.35 metres (warning level) while the water level at Sungai Bandau stood at 5.20 metres.

Mulliadi said readings for both rivers showed that the water was steadily subsiding at press time.

Also at the scene to assist were teams from the Fire and Rescue Department as well as police.

Kota Marudu Police Chief Supt Mohd Izaan Abdullah said the stretch along Jalan Kota Marudu-Pitas as well as Kampung Garudu was still passable to all vehicles at press time.

"The route at the Popok roundabout was only accessible to heavy vehicles and four-wheel-drives," he said, adding that a landslide was also reported at Kampung Piso, Jalan Gaya.

The district is the latest district to be hit in view of the monsoon season after Penampang, Kota Belud and Pitas last month.

Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) had to shut down power supply to several villages in Kota Marudu after flood waters affected its substation in the district. SESB said the 8am closure was necessary for safety purposes, adding that more than 1,500 consumers in 55 villages were affected.

SESB will continue to monitor the flood situation in the affected areas to ensure the safety of residents.
