Kota Kinabalu: Ng Kui Tai @ Ng Kui Fong, the mother of former Assistant Minister of Finance cum Luyang Assemblywoman, Melanie Chia Chui Ket, passed away peacefully on January 17 at Queen Elizabeth Hospital II. She was 87.

She leaves behind seven children, 15 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Ng started her working career as a teacher in Kota Kinabalu, and founded the Tawau Dressmaking School after moving there with her husband, the late Chia Tai Hong. The couple worked hard to put all children through tertiary education.

She had taught many women and young girls the skill of dressmaking, a skill which had empowered many women in those days. Today, most of them are grandmothers or great grandmothers themselves.

Ng called it a day from the tailoring profession in 1981 and had been a dialysis patient for the last eight years.

Relatives and friends may pay their last respects at House No. 26, Lorong Burung Ruai 1, Taman Yakim Jaya, here.

The funeral service will be held at Fook Lu Siew Funeral Parlour (Room 1E) tomorrow (Saturday) at 9am, after which the hearse will proceed to the Fook Lu Siew Crematorium for cremation.
