Kuala Lumpur: With less than 24 hours before the new season of the M-League kicks off, the Penang Football Association (PFA) were rocked by the sudden departure of its President Datuk Nazir Ariff Munshi Ariff.Nazir Ariff stepped down as PFA president with immediate effect.

Penang team manager Zairil Khir Johari who confirmed the resignation was however, not surprised by the sudden turn of events.

"I met Nazir Ariff today and he notified me of his decision. He wants PFA to start the new year with a new chapter," he said Thursday.

The post of president would be filled temporarily by deputy president Laurence Loh until an official statement is issued.

Zairil said he was not surprised because Nazir Ariff had in October indicated that he would like to step down after being at the helm for more than three years and witnessing Penang moving up from the Premier League to the Super League.

"I wish to thank Nazir Ariff for what he has done to improve the status of football in Penang," he said.

Earlier, Penang assistant team manager Mohamad Nazim Ariff Nazir Ariff had tendered his resignation after allegedly being sidelined by the PFA team management when Zairil was appointed as the team manager.

Following the announcement that Zairil was appointed the team manager, rumours were rife that Nazir Ariff who step down when the latter's company, Aspen Group withdrew as sponsors for Penang. – Bernama
