Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Energy Corporation (SEC) is embarking on the distribution of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to cater to the demand of industries for an alternative energy source. Its Chief Executive Officer Datuk Harun Ismail on Thursday said the commencement of this plan is expected end of the year or latest early next year and is presently awaiting Cabinet approval.

The move would allow SEC to cater to hotel operators with limited space to commission a compressed natural gas virtual pipeline, which the company presently sells and distributes. "We have received a lot of requests from hotels (for compressed gas) but unfortunately, we were not able to supply because of the space constraint.

"So we are trying to embark on liquefied natural gas and hope to be able to reach them," he said, after the official commissioning ceremony for the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Daughter Station at Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa here.

According to Harun, the distribution of the LNG would be similar to the CNG, except a smaller containment unit is required compared to CNG. He said the amount of LNG stored would be more than the 5,000 cubic metres of compressed gas if were to be stored in the existing containment unit (daughter station).

Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa is presently the second resort operator to have engaged with SEC on CNG supplies in Sabah. Its General Manager Gavin Weightman said CNG is a cleaner and greener alternative compared to diesel to run the resort's boilers for hot water.

"It's also cost effective and reduces significantly on carbon footprint," said Gavin, adding that the resort, which had been using CNG last year, is already using less than one per cent of diesel over the same period.

He noted the hotel is anticipating a return of investment for the commissioning of the daughter station between 18 and 24 months depending on the fluctuation of diesel prices.
