Puzzled by repeat yearly lion heads requests

Kota Kinabalu: The donating of many "lion heads" to the same groups of people year in and year out during Chinese New Year have led members of the public to question what happened to those of previous years. Some of them who called up the Daily Express said they wished to be anonymous so as not be seen to offend the recipients. The critics were referring to reports that a developer donated 18 "lion heads" to nine Chinese-based organisations, most of them being the same recipients as last year.

They comprised lion dance cultural troupes, schools, Chinese clan associations, a Chinese temple and a martial arts body. Kapayan Assemblyman Dr Edwin Bosi agreed with those raising the issue, saying they are asking a legitimate question."I am also asking the same question. Where had last year's 'lion heads' gone to?" he queried. "Don't you think it is such a waste?"

Previously, he made similar donations when approached by groups in his constituency, but had stopped doing so although there had been subsequent requests."It made me open my eyes and wonder what had actually happened to the earlier contributions.

Did they get lost somehow?" he said, adding that he could not afford to keep donating.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

According to one lion dance participant, normally a new "lion head" can last at least five years if not more. "So I don't see the need for new ones every year," he pointed out.
