Kota Kinabalu: Smart decisions such as allowing City Hall's proposal to include Chinese names for certain streets in the city prove the State Government is tolerant and considerate in always putting the needs of the people first.Federation of Chinese Associations Sabah (FCAS) President Datuk Seri TC Goh said the decision to allow Chinese names displayed for main streets in the city such as Jalan Gaya, Jalan Kolam, Jalan Tugu and Jalan Pantai would be appreciated, especially by Chinese tourists.

"As we know, the number of Chinese tourists keeps increasing year by year.

The presence of these tourists who are categorised as a spending group, will surely help grow our local economy in Sabah," he said.

Goh was speaking at the launching of the four-day 2017 Chinese New Year Carnival organised by City Hall and FCAS by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman at the Padang Merdeka, Monday.

Furthermore, Goh said under Musa's leadership, Sabah, especially Kota Kinabalu, had been chosen as a clean and green city and one of the best cities for retirement in the region.

He also thanked the State Government for its continuous support for the Chinese community in the State and for coming together to celebrate the annual event.

This, he said, proved that Sabah is the model of the 1Malaysia spirit where the people never failed to celebrate each other's festivals together regardless of race and religion.

"Although we are now faced with an economic downturn from various aspects, the State Government continues to support our cultural events such as this carnival. We are thankful to the Chief Minister for his generosity in providing financial assistance to ensure this event is a success," he said.

Goh called upon the Chinese community to continue supporting the Government so as to bring the country out of the economic slump.

This year being the Year of the Rooster, he said, symbolises the end of darkness as a rooster crows to mark the start of a new day in the morning.

"Let us work hard, be prudent and regardless of political affiliations and remain united for the sake of a strong State Government," he said.

During the launching event, traditional Chinese drums and native gong beats were played alternatively before the guests of honour proceeded to light the tanglung.

Musa also launched the multi-language street name signs during the event before participating in the Lau Sang ceremony.

Guests were entertained with several performances including a choir performance by City Hall, singing and dancing performances, line dance 'Little Apple', lion dance and fireworks display.

More than 200 stalls selling food, souvenirs and various other Chinese New Year goodies will line up Padang Merdeka for the next four days.
