People have final say: Tangau
Tuaran: Acting Upko President Datuk Wilfred Madius Tangau said any party can claim they will be able to sweep all the seats in the coming 14th General Election (GE14) but in the end it's the people who will decide. "For us, the important thing is the people. We come from the people. Whatever we do today also comes from the people, and it's all for the benefit of the people. So to those who insist that they can win on their own, well that is their right," he said to reporters after an Upko Chinese New Year walkabout in Tamparuli town on Monday.

Tangau, who is also Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, was commenting on claims reportedly made by Warisan Sabah Deputy President Darell Leiking that his party was capable of sweeping the State and Parliament seats in the State to form the government in the coming general election.

He said in Barisan Nasional (BN) the component parties have long worked well together over the years and there is no race or political party that can rule by themselves.

Thus, Tangau said, people can judge for themselves the performance of BN in governing the country and claimed that even the Government's efforts such as Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) was distorted by some.

"Some say the BR1M is bribery and it is wrong. But when they see that this year the Government approved RM6.8 billion for BR1M where each person receives RM1,200, it is all for the people's benefit.

He added that even the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was distorted by some claiming it was a burden and stealing from the people, but today it's proven with the new system the Government gets the money which is returned to the people and the Government is able to maintain its services to the people as well.

He said even those who once opposed the GST now agree that the tax system will benefit the people and country.

"So, what the BN did may not be popular at one point, but what we do is right for people, for

our country, for our prosperity. So the people themselves can judge for themselves as to which leader is just talking," he said.

Meanwhile, when asked about the CNY walkabout visit in Tamparuli, Tangau said it was an opportunity for Upko to go to the ground and meet the people to listen and see for ourselves the various challenges that they face here.

"We have seen the situation in the market here and we will do as much as possible to fix all the problems we have seen such as lighting and water supply in the town market. There are also leaks in the market roof and the people here have also complained about the cleanliness issue here, rubbish management and also the burnt out buildings.

"We will take immediate action on this matter including asking officers from the district council to take action immediately particularly the problems faced by the traders at the town market.

"I will also liaise with my ministry officials to find the necessary allocations to rectify this issue.

"We also see that the community leaders who accompany us today are people from various races and religious background and this is exactly what we are doing in Sabah to strengthen peace and harmony and part of the effort to do away with racial bigotry and an opportunity to strengthen relationships with the local community," he said, adding that this was also an opportunity for the community leaders to come together with the leadership of BN in Tuaran.
