Labuan: Member of Parliament Datuk Rozman Isli said the Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Ministry should always pay serious attention on the supply of essential goods in Labuan. He said this is pertinent to ensure the supply of such goods remains available and unaffected by delivery or other problems.Speaking after a stock check at a hypermart here, Rozman said:

"I have discussed with the Ministry officials and other agencies here and found that the shortage of subsidised cooking oil was only serious for a few days and this was due to the new Customs rule requiring transport companies to register before transporting the oil to Labuan."Rozman said this was mainly to prevent leakages but the implementation of the new rule had some teething problems and these had been sorted out and supplies were expected to be back to normal. He assured he would personally ensure that the supply of cooking oil would not become a Labuan Chinese New Year "spoiler."Due to the shortage of subsidised cooking oil, there was greater demand for the bottled and more expensive cooking oil.

The additional demand caused these brands of oil to also run short, causing panic buying."I don't blame anybody. It is not a case of hoarding food supplies. Restaurants and homes need to stock up to avoid being caught in an awkward situation during Chinese New Year," said Rozman.

He added that while their fears seemed to be justified under the present situation, they should also not indulge in panic or excessive buying to ensure that everyone has cooking oil. "Co-operation is the best remedy to the situation."
