Kota Kinabalu: The Lahad Datu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Federation of Sabah Industries (FSI) presidents Mok Teng Sang and Datuk Mohd Basri Abdul Gafar respectively, urged residents in the area, particularly fishermen, to strictly respect the sea curfew order for their own safety."We understand the curfew has in a way created some temporary inconvenience to the public.

But lets not forget also that the extension of the curfew order will help protect us from being kidnap victims and loss of properties," they said.

They said the enforcement of the 6pm-6am curfew order was designed to ensure that the waters in the Esszone will not be encroached by armed gunmen who could threaten the safety of international researchers and tourists visiting resort islands in the area.

"Lahad Datu is a potential big revenue earner for Sabah in the future given the fact that the district is blessed with fertile soil suitable for agriculture, rich in marine products and has many beautiful islands and beaches for tourism purposes," said Basri who hails from Tungku.

Mok said the district is home to many big palm oil plantation farms and suitable for setting up manufacturing factories because of its strategic geographical location.

Hence, both leaders strongly believe that it is vital to have security stability in the area to lure more investors.

They said further upgrading of present infrastructure facilities like roads, water, electricity and security among others will help achieve the district's desired development goals which will result in improved revenues both for the district and state and levelling up of the people's standard of living.

Meanwhile, the fishing community within Esszone must play their roles in channelling information on any suspicious activities in their areas to the authorities.

Esscom Commander Datuk Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid said such cooperation is important in taking the steps necessary to ensure the security in the vast zone remains under control.

He said this in a press conference after attending the Meeting between Esscom and the Fishing Community here, Friday.

Also present were Esscom CEO Noor Alam Khan, Beluran Umno Youth Chief Samad Jambri, Beluran District Police Chief Shivanathan Velautham and about 200 fishermen from around Beluran.

In the meantime, Wan Abdul Bari said security in the Sabah's waters is under control and insisted that the curfew, which entered its 59th phase on Monday, is not a hindrance to the fishing community but was put in place to help curb unwanted incidents.
