Kota Kinabalu: The Lahad Datu Chinese Chamber of Commerce urged the Immigration Department and other relevant authorities to simplify procedures for applying and approving quota and work permits for foreign workers in Sabah, particularly Lahad Datu.Similarly, it hoped the levy fee for foreign workers can be lowered to not only ease financial constraints of both employers and employees.

"It would be practical and highly appreciated if the Immigration Department and other parties concerned could send a mobile team (even once a month) to Lahad Datu to facilitate the applications of foreign worker quota application and worker permits," its President Mok Teng Sang said.

Presently, applicants have to go to the immigration office either in Tawau, Sandakan, or even Kota Kinabalu which is time consuming and incurred additional expenses.

Mok said applicants had to stay 2-3 days in Sandakan or Tawau or Kota Kinabalu when securing approval for the said documents.

"The red tape in these government agencies concerned are affecting our operations and we hope the State and Federal government will seriously look into the matter," he stressed.

Mok said Lahad Datu is blessed with fertile soil for agriculture and the shores are rich with various marine life that could easily improve the district's economy if both the business sector and the government, including the people work in unison.

He said Lahad Datu still needs foreign workers, especially in the agriculture and maritime sectors, not forgetting the tourism industry.

"Hence our appeal for the government to eradicate red tapes and simplify its requirements" he added.
