Local charged with having Sun bear body parts

Kota Kinabalu: A 33-year-old local man was charged with having body parts of Malayan sun bears without a permit.Tijelo Jacquinn Kuin pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court Judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad on Thursday.He is accused of having eight bear paws, eight canine teeth and two gall bladders of the animal at 12.10pm on Aug 8, 2016 at the parking lot in Tanjung Aru near the Shangri-la's Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa, here.ADVERTISEMENT Tijelo allegedly had the body parts of the endangered species which is fully protected under the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997.The offence under Section 41(1) of the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 provides for a fine of up to RM50,000 or a jail term of up to five years, or both, on conviction.Ainul set Apr 12-13 this year to hear the case and released Tijelo on a bail of RM15,000 in a local surety.The court also ordered him to report to the Keningau police station once a month and forbade him from leaving the Keningau district, unless with the permission of the district police chief.ADVERTISEMENT He was also warned to not tamper or communicate with any prosecution witnesses.Earlier, Tijelo who was not represented asked for bail saying he has to look after his family and that his mother is currently sick.

He told the court that he has no permanent job.Tijelo also asked for his vehicle seized by the Wildlife Department to be returned to him as according to him the vehicle was the only transport he had.The court did not grant Tijelo's application. Prosecuting Officer Abdul Karim Dakog of the Wildlife Department who appeared for the prosecution, informed the court that about six witnesses would be called in the hearing.Tijelo failed to furnish the bail amount offered to him and was remanded further.In the Magistrate's Court, a 41-year-old man claimed trial to committing criminal intimidation against another man.Ong Chun Whey who appeared before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie, is accused of threatening one Toh Kok Soon, 33, via telephone that he would freeze his account, arrest his business partner and ask a group of gangsters and police to arrest him. The court set Feb 17 for case management and released Ong on a bail of RM3,000 in two local sureties.Inspector Rasydan Jasni prosecuted and Ong was represented by counsel Ram Singh.
