Justice for environ with 1m trees soon
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah and Sarawak Chief Justice Tan Sri Richard Malanjum has got the ball rolling on yet another environmental cause – he wants one million trees to be planted in Sabah this year. The campaign called One Heart One Tree was launched by the Kota Kinabalu Court Working Group on Environment, at the Kota Kinabalu court grounds Friday.

Sabah Court Director Indra Ayub said the project initiated by Malanjum is aimed at creating greater environmental awareness among both court staff as well as the public. "The purpose of this campaign is to encourage participation from all staff, officers and judges of the court and public to donate at least a tree.

"The trees donated will then be planted all over Sabah. We will start to plant trees at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' (SPCA) land on Saturday," he said.

The mammoth effort comes after Malanjum got court staff together to find a permanent solution to the rubbish pollution at Kampung Sembulan Tengah last year.

The area which had gained notoriety as an eyesore in the middle of the city quickly found itself getting a much-awaited clean-up, at times by minor offenders ordered to do community service under the supervision of court staff.

On Friday Indra revealed that the much bigger one million tree project had actually already started with the planting of trees in Danum Valley and Tambunan.

"We will continue to plant trees in Beaufort Court in February, Kg Sonsogon Magandai in Kota Marudu in March, Pitas and Kota Belud in April and other places suggested by the public.

"We also encourage individuals, departments, companies, associations, schools, universities and NGOs to organise or to plant any kind of trees in any areas in Sabah. "The trees planted will be counted as part of the one million trees planting project and I hope we can achieve the target by December this year.

"Public can like our Facebook page which is 1Heart 1Tree or visit our site at www.ssceg.myenvironment.my," said Indra.

According to Indra who is a Sessions Court Judge, many tree saplings had been donated by the court staff on Friday leaving about 999,889 more to achieve the target.

He added that the Sabah Law Association was also hoping to contribute about 200,000 saplings besides assistance from the Forestry Department and City Hall in achieving the project's aim to plant one million trees throughout the State this year.

Meanwhile, High Court Judge Ravinthran Paramaguru who launched the programme said it was to create awareness to respect the environment.

"It is a very good programme not only to Sabah but also to ourselves and is a good thing to share in social media," he said.

Also present were SLA President Brenndon Keith Soh, Sessions Court Judges namely Ainul Shahrin Mohamad, Noorhafizah Mohd Salim, Azreena Aziz, Elsie Primus, and Abu Bakar Manaf, Magistrates Cindy Mc Juce Balitus, Stephanie Sherron Abbie, Jessica Ombou Kakayun and Lovely Natasha Charles.
