Kota Marudu: Parti Bersatu Sabah Acting President Datuk Seri Maximus Ongkili wants the authorities to tighten the laws and regulations to stop further incidents involving tourists in Sabah. He said he would raise the matter in Parliament and demand from the ministries and agencies involved to leverage the quality on tourism safety to be at par with international standards.

"The matter of safety is also related to how international communities view us on how we take the question of safety of our visitors," he said after closing the One Community, One RTD (Road Transport Department) programme, Saturday.

Also present at the event were RTD Director General Datuk Seri Nadzri Siron, RTD State Director Datuk Mohd Shuhaili Mohd Taufek, his Assistant Director Datuk Abdul Rahman Zakaria and Kota Marudu District Officer Arnold Joibi. Ongkili said this in response to the catamaran tragedy which saw three Chinese nationals perish and six others still missing following an excursion to Mengalum Island last Jan. 28.

Citing disappointment over the tragedy, he was confident those involved in the search and rescue mission are doing their best to locate the missing individuals and left it to the authorities to unravel the truth of what really happened.

Meanwhile, On the One Community, One RTD initiative Nadzri said, 242 residents obtained their motorcycle licence in an effort by the department to increase the number of people getting the licence here.

"Our hope is more will adhere to the road traffic laws. The highest number of accidents in the country comprises motorcyclists and this is why we are issuing them licences under the MyLesen programme, especially for those 45 years old and above and 21 years old and below," he said.

On another note, Nadzri said a total of 16,625 motorists were checked during the Chinese New Year Strategic Op 2017 throughout Sabah. Out of the number, actions were taken on 3,093 road users and 1,193 summons were issued throughout the operation from Jan 1 to Feb 5.

"A total of 536 summons are from no license, no road tax and insurance coverage and this year we took action against seven types of violation. It's straight away getting summoned and bringing the offenders to court.

No compound.

The seven major traffic offences are beating the traffic lights, overtaking on double lines, driving in the emergency lane, cutting queues, using mobile phones while driving, not using seat belts and not using helmets.
